A time trial can feel wrong when you pace it correctly. The first minutes should be controlled, not heroic. Your breathing should be hard but manageable, and riders who sprint past early may still be coming back to you later. Knowing how to pace a time trial means accepting that the fastest ride is rarely the one that feels fastest at the start.
A good TT is an even distribution of effort across the course, adjusted for terrain, wind, duration, and your own strengths. It is not blindly holding one number from the start ramp to the finish. Your job is to spend your available energy where it produces the most speed, while keeping enough capacity to finish with purpose.
Start With the Demand of the Course
Before choosing a power target, identify what the course will ask from you. A flat 10-mile TT, a rolling 25-mile course, and a 40-kilometer event with a headwind home all require different execution.
Look at the distance, elevation profile, technical turns, road surface, forecast wind, and expected temperature. Note where the course climbs, where it exposes you to crosswinds, and where you can maintain an aerodynamic position without interruption. Those details tell you whether the race rewards a steady output or repeated controlled changes in effort.
For a short time trial of roughly 10 to 20 minutes, you can usually ride near or slightly above threshold power. For an effort lasting 30 to 60 minutes, the target generally sits closer to sustainable threshold. Over longer distances, especially in heat or on rolling terrain, the winning number may be lower than your ego wants it to be.
Your recent training should set the target, not your best-ever five-minute power or a number from someone else's race file. If you have a reliable functional threshold power estimate, use it as a starting point. Then consider how fresh you are, whether you have practiced holding aero power, and how much the conditions will increase the cost of cooling and hydration.
Build a Simple Time Trial Pacing Plan
The best plan is specific enough to guide decisions but simple enough to execute under pressure. You should know your target power range, your opening limit, where you can press, and what a strong finish looks like.
For a mostly flat course, aim for a narrow power band. Small fluctuations happen, especially after turns or through wind changes, but avoid riding a series of surges. Every unnecessary acceleration costs more than it returns because getting back up to speed is expensive.
On rolling terrain, allow power to rise slightly uphill and ease slightly downhill. It makes sense to work harder when speed is lower on a climb, because added watts create more meaningful gains. On fast descents, added power often produces little extra speed while increasing fatigue. The adjustment should still be controlled. A short rise above target on a hill is very different from attacking every incline.
If you use a power meter, set a realistic ceiling for the first section. For example, you might allow a brief increase for the start and then settle into your target range within the first minute. That ceiling prevents race-day adrenaline from turning the opening mile into an anaerobic effort.
If you race by heart rate, use it carefully. Heart rate lags behind effort and can drift upward as you heat up or dehydrate. It is useful as a warning sign, particularly in longer events, but it should not be your only pacing tool. Perceived effort, power, speed, and the course all matter.
The First Minutes: Get Up to Speed, Then Settle
The start is where most time trials are lost. Not because riders are too slow, but because they commit too much too early.
Accelerate decisively from the start ramp or start line, then transition into your planned effort. Do not chase the rider ahead, react to spectators, or interpret a high opening speed as proof that you should raise the power. Your legs are fresh, your heart rate is still catching up, and the effort can feel easier than it really is.
Use the first few minutes to establish position as well as power. Get low, relax your shoulders, keep your head still, and pedal smoothly. An aggressive aero position only helps if you can hold it while producing power. If your hips rock, your breathing feels restricted, or you constantly need to sit up, a slightly less extreme position may be faster over the whole distance.
Think of the opening section as controlled commitment. You are not saving yourself, but you are also not borrowing energy from the final miles before you know what the day will deliver.
Use Terrain and Wind Without Chasing Speed
Speed is the outcome, not always the pacing target. A tailwind can make your speed look impressive at a modest effort. A headwind can make the same power feel frustratingly slow. Chasing a speed number into a headwind is one of the quickest ways to overpace.
Ride your power or perceived-effort plan into the wind, stay patient, and protect your aerodynamic position. In a crosswind, focus on stability and clean handling. A tense upper body wastes energy and can make it harder to stay narrow on the bike.
Technical corners deserve their own plan. Brake only as much as needed, look through the exit, accelerate smoothly, and return to target effort rather than sprinting in panic. If there are repeated turns, expect normalized power to rise. Your average power may not show the true cost of those accelerations.
On climbs, use the grade to apply controlled pressure. On descents and fast tailwind sections, prioritize aero form, cadence, and recovery within the effort. This is where pacing becomes execution rather than a single number on a screen.
Divide the Race Into Three Parts
A time trial is easier to manage when you give each section a job. The first third is about restraint and position. The middle third is about holding your plan when the effort stops feeling clean. The final third is where you spend what is left.
During the middle portion, do a quick body check: Are you still in aero? Are your shoulders relaxed? Is your cadence sustainable? Have you started drifting above your target because the course got uncomfortable? Small corrections here prevent a major fade later.
The final section is the time to race. If your pacing has been right, you should be able to increase effort gradually rather than relying on one desperate sprint. Start pressing with enough distance left to gain time, especially on a course with a known headwind, climb, or demanding final section.
A strong finish does not always mean your power spikes dramatically. Sometimes it means you maintain your target while everyone else fades. If you can raise the effort in the final two to five minutes without losing aero form, you paced the race well.
Make Your Data Visible Before Fatigue Takes Over
A pacing plan only works if you can read it quickly. Race-day stress narrows attention, and fatigue makes basic decisions harder than they should be. Set your bike computer screens before the event so the fields that matter are visible: current power, lap-average power, elapsed time, distance, and perhaps cadence.
Avoid staring at instant power. It moves constantly and can encourage overcorrection. Lap-average power or a three-second power field provides a more usable signal. Use it to keep your effort in range, not to micromanage every pedal stroke.

Practice the Plan Before Race Day
You cannot fully learn time trial pacing in a race. Include race-specific intervals in training, ideally on the TT bike or in the position you will use on event day. Practice settling into target power after a hard start. Practice holding aero when your legs are loaded. Practice finishing the final minutes harder than the first.
A useful session might include a 20- to 40-minute effort on a familiar road or trainer, broken into sections that mirror your course plan. Begin just under target, settle at target, then finish progressively harder. Review the file afterward. Did power fade? Did cadence collapse? Did you sit up too often? The answers are more useful than a single average number.
Fueling also matters when the event is longer than a short standalone TT or part of a triathlon. Start adequately fueled, take in carbohydrates before the effort when appropriate, and do not introduce a complicated feeding strategy mid-race unless you have rehearsed it. A plan you cannot execute at speed is not a plan.
